Writer Testimonials — Field Notes

"I came to BookTrustmark with a sprawling 140,000-word manuscript and no sense of where the story actually began. Their structural assessment gave me a roadmap I could trust. I cut 30,000 words and the novel found its spine."
— Declan Ó Briain, Literary Fiction, Co. Cork
"The developmental edit was forensic. Every note was specific, actionable, and respectful of my voice. I signed with an agent within five months of completing their programme."
— Aisling Maguire, Memoir, Dublin
"What surprised me most was the publishing strategy session. They didn't just fix my prose — they helped me understand the market I was entering."
— Tomás Whelan, Non-Fiction, Galway

Editor's
Briefing

BookTrustmark exists because too many talented writers stall between the final draft and the publishing world. We are not a vanity press. We are not a ghostwriting agency. We are editorial professionals who read manuscripts with the same rigour as acquisitions editors — and then help you close the gap between where your book is and where it needs to be.

Our practice is built around three convictions: that every manuscript deserves an honest assessment before money is spent on production; that developmental editing is the single highest-value investment an unpublished author can make; and that publishing strategy should be discussed before — not after — the writing is finished.

We work from our office on Auer Terrace in West Bryantton, but our authors are spread across Ireland and beyond. If you're writing a book and you're serious about it, we'd like to hear from you.

Practice focus:
Literary fiction, memoir, narrative non-fiction, historical fiction, genre fiction (crime, thriller, speculative), academic monographs, essay collections, and hybrid forms.

Not a fit for:
Poetry chapbooks, screenplays, children's picture books, or self-help titles without a narrative core.

Is BookTrustmark Right for Your Project?

We are selective about the projects we take on — not because of genre snobbery, but because our editorial approach demands deep engagement. Here's how to know if we're a good fit:

  • You have a completed or near-complete manuscript (at least 60,000 words for fiction, 40,000 for non-fiction)
  • You are open to structural feedback, not just line-level corrections
  • You understand that editing is a collaborative process, not a service performed on a passive text
  • You have a realistic timeline — quality editorial work cannot be rushed into a two-week window
  • You are willing to invest in your manuscript before investing in cover design or printing
  • You want honest counsel, even when the honest answer is "this needs another draft"

CASE DOSSIER
Niamh Callanan
Historical Fiction · 98,000 words · Co. Limerick

Niamh arrived with a manuscript set during the Irish War of Independence — a story she'd been researching for six years. The prose was evocative but the structure was tangled: three timelines, two narrators, and a 40-page opening that buried the inciting incident. Our developmental edit restructured the timeline architecture, tightened the dual narration, and identified the emotional throughline the book had been circling. After two revision rounds guided by our notes, Niamh submitted to agents. She received representation within three months and a two-book deal followed the next spring.

Working Principles

Candour Over Comfort

We will never tell you a manuscript is ready when it isn't. Our reports are thorough, specific, and honest. Flattery doesn't serve your book.

Voice Preservation

We edit toward your voice, not ours. Every suggestion is designed to strengthen what's already distinctive about your writing, not to homogenise it.

Market Awareness

We stay current with Irish and UK publishing trends, agent preferences, and submission standards. Our editorial advice is informed by real market conditions.

No Assembly Lines

We limit our active projects to ensure each manuscript gets the attention it deserves. You will never be one of twenty files in a queue.

Transparent Pricing

Fees are quoted upfront after the diagnostic read. No hidden charges, no upsells mid-project. If the scope changes, we discuss it before proceeding.

Long-Term Relationships

Many of our authors return for their second and third books. We invest in your development as a writer, not just the manuscript in front of us.

Readiness Panel — Common Questions

If you've completed at least one full revision on your own and feel the book has reached a plateau — where you can sense problems but can't identify or solve them — it's likely time for professional editorial input. We don't require a polished draft; we require a committed one.
A manuscript assessment gives you a high-level report on structure, pacing, character, voice, and marketability — without line-by-line annotations. A developmental edit goes deeper: we work through the manuscript page by page, leaving detailed margin notes alongside a comprehensive editorial letter. The assessment is diagnostic; the developmental edit is surgical.
Absolutely. A significant portion of our clients are working on their first book. We tailor our feedback to your experience level and provide additional context where needed — explaining not just what to change, but why it matters and how to approach the revision.
We don't act as agents, but we do prepare submission packs — query letters, synopses, and sample chapter reviews — and provide a curated shortlist of agents who are actively acquiring in your genre. Our knowledge of the Irish and UK agency landscape is current and specific.
We'll tell you honestly. After the diagnostic read, if we believe the manuscript needs further self-revision before professional editing would be cost-effective, we'll say so — and we'll explain what to focus on. We'd rather you spend your budget at the right time than waste it prematurely.
For assessments and strategy sessions, full payment is due before work begins. For developmental and copy edits, we require 50% upfront and 50% upon delivery. Mentorship is billed monthly. All fees are quoted in euros and invoiced electronically.
